Beer is not one style- it is not one taste.

There are as many different tastes in beers as there are moods. There is a beer for every mood, every food, and every activity.

Happy Summer!
Time to taste a lager or ale with flavor!
Lagers vs. Ales

 Lagers

    Ales

The word lager comes from the German word lagern which means, "to store". These bottom fermenting yeast brews do their magic at a cool 34 degrees F more or less, and are often further stored at cool temperature to mature. Lager yeast produce fewer by-product characters than ale yeast which allows for other flavors to pull through, such as hops.

This category of beer uses yeast that ferments at the "top" with temps a little warmer (o.k. 30 degrees), these little yeasties do their thing quicker too!  Ale yeast are known to produce by-products called esters, which are "flowery" and "fruity" aromas you know those apple, pear, pineapple, grass, hay, plum, prune, or in Kerry's case "banana in the nose!"

Enough of the book stuff now for the real education -- try some of these beauties for some summer yummers!

This week's "Try It Brews"
Boy it gonna be a cooker this week, that and the hazy smoke skies -- could be just the week to try some of the new ales and lagers that have rolled in!

S= Smithfield; GP= Gov's Pointe Availability

Let's start with a couple of ales . . .
Bells does it again!

Amber Ale

Belle's call this their flagship beer.  Made from mostly pale malt with some Munich and caramel malts giving this brew a slightly sweet, I'm not talking sticky but pleasantly refreshing, flavor that is balanced really well with a "melange of American hops." Pours a deep copper color and to sum it up, rich flavor.

Not to be out done - New
Holland Brewing has two great beers to try!

Sundog- Sundog is an amber ale with a  deep copper color. The Biscuit malt and Fuggle hop gives Sundog a toasty character and a subtle malty sweetness, toffee/carmel. Body is pleasantly lighter making this an easy quaffer with grill food.

Full Circle- This kÖlsch-style crisp and well-balanced, this beer is a classic.  Pours a pure golden color white-head that quickly dissapears, flavors are crisp and subtly bitter hops.  This beer is what a summer beer should be - drink chilled with feet up.

And now a few lagers!
Let's go International!

Tusker- This Kenya brew has been a shop favorite for many a summer, if you haven't had it lately it is time. Clean and crisp, balanced grain flavor.  Serve fridge-cool for a great summer refresher!

Aris-This one is from Greece, the Mythos Brewing Company.  Rich blonde color, with an almost lemon aftertaste -- but not bitter, refreshing lemon.

And to round out your tasting six pack:

James Boag's Premium Lager --bills itself as "Tasmania's finest premium lager."  Boy, that's a title to live up to! Beer Advocate classifies this baby as a Euro Lager, crisp and refreshing, mild hops just perfect to refresh after a hard day.
